I am a traveler, a passerby. When searching for a good mechanic shop for my AC problem in the area, Google led me to Mac's Auto Repair in Whittier. With 5 star ratings, I decided to give it a try. Boy, I was wrong...completely wrong! Completely DISSATISFIED. It wasn't Mac who worked on my AC, it was JOHN KO
On April 12, 2021, 2:40pm I walked into Mac's Auto Repair (on my receipt it says: BEST AUTO REPAIR & Transmission).
I told John KO, the mechanic, that my AC stopped working. He said $185 for diagnostics plus topping off necessary refrigerant/freon plus he would try to repair the best he could within that $185.
Additionally, I described to him that I feel like the climate ctrl knob is not engaging the gear possibly the gear is slipping. He took note of that. He said he would try to work on it today but someone ahead of me. 6pm , he came he said couldn't work on it but will do it first thing in the morning at 8am.
April 13, 2021
7am, I rolled in and waited. 8am, John started working on someone else's car instead of mine. DISAPPOINTED. I wanted to say something but held back. Around 9:30am he took my car in, parked half-way in the bay. 10am, he began disassembling panels trying to get to the rotational cables connected to the back of the AC/Heater knob. which was part of the diagnostics.
Around 12pm,
He took the piece out, turned the knob, sure enough, just as I described, the gear was disengaged about 90% of the time. He said to replace this whole Gear box (Climate Control Box), it would cost about $1000-$1500. I know it was a rip-off quote. (I called O'Reilley and Junk Yard later, it's anywhere between $50-$150). I told him I am not going to spend that much money for this. He said he can disconnect the cables and re-route them closer to the column of the steering wheels. This way, I can pull the cables to turn on/off the AC/Heater he said.
Basically, he DID NOT FIX anything just to leave the cables out in the open. I thought maybe it's ok to push/pull it that way temporarily.
As John KO was putting back the panels back piece by piece,
he did ask me when I plan on going back on my road trip to which I said "tomorrow".
1PM came, I had to grab lunch and would be back in an hour or so.
As I was leaving I noticed his associate, another mechanic was peeping in my van for quite sometime.
(When I came back, my 2nd phone, brand new Motorola Ace 5G was missing though didn't realize at the time. ANOTHER GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT!)
3:15pm, I got back to the shop thinking my van would be well taken care of. Started the engine, and noticed two wires/cables sticking between the steering column. I now realized maybe it's not done yet? I turned on the fan and began to feel the cold air coming out. Ok, how about the Heater? I pushed the cable in to see if the heat would come out but NO heat. I went to see John who's with a client in his office basically signaling him that I'm back. He came by while I was in the van a few minutes later. I asked if the job is done. He said there's nothing else he could do since I didn't want the whole Gear Box (Climate Control) replaced. JUST LIKE THAT!!! Those two cables will just be there and exposed. He said If I want to switch from Heater to AC, I have to stop the van, open up the hood and push the AC/Heater switch under the hood. I was stunned and shocked by this response. This guy expects me to stop the car while I am driving just to change the Climate Control. John KO, you duped me. You are F*king idiot! Other than the diagnostics, you did NOT fix anything. Instead of $185 for the diagnostics as you quoted, you charged me over $430 even if you had reduced it down to $300, you still price-gouged me.
John KO, you're one evil man. KARMA exists!
The worse part: About 15hrs after I left, I realized my phone is basically stolen while I was out to lunch. Only then did I understand why the other mechanic was snooping around in my van.

Rude, don't like the phone call I had with the owner, he wasn't much help and he just Patronize me the whole time, I called twice on two different occasions, if I can give them anything lower then this i would
The owner John is amazing. They are the only mechanics I trust. And they dont play around with the price and they will never ever oversell you or offer anything neccessary. I had to beg him to change my break pad because he was telling me that there are still some left, whereas all the other places will try to have you change your pad even if you still had a lot left. The most honest and experieced person you would find. Highly recommended!
