What clients say about Mono Hot Springs Resort in Mono Hot Springs (CA)

Not the experience I had hoped for. Far off of the main road, along a sketchy single lane road with narrow turnouts. Although we did not spend the night up there it was not the hot spring experience that we hoped for. Hot spring spa was low bar of a tub with lukewarm warm water and a jacuzzi tub with no jets. The housekeeper was rude by blowing a leaf blower in our face while trying to enjoy a quiet afternoon in the not so hot tube. To drive an hour off of the main road and pay $50 to be annoyed by housekeeper and be not able to use the worn out towel in the hot tub area was not worth the effort or the money. Place not worth the time or money

The road up there is a beautiful ride but the road itself is something else

A great area without crowds. There are a variety of cabins and a campground. Great hiking, back packing, river floating, fishing and lots if quiet.

Tried to go in a tub, but they were all full for a while. Was finally able to get into a small river inlet tub. Lots of walking, but beautiful location

It was awesome 54 years ago when I went with a friend on our motorcycles. Traded hash with the staff and the world was our oyster. Soaking in the tub with hot mineral water up to your nostrils was the best.

Location is unbeatable. But would rather camp than rent the cabins again. Cabins are quite costly for what they are. We had a mouse in the room. Each cabin amenities vary so check with the staff before checking in. Each cabin comes with its fireplace which is a nice touch. The general store has basic necessities and pretty well stocked with beer and snacks. Our biggest disappointment was with the food at the cafe. Very overpriced (it is probably costly to get the ingredients up) and the only item that we enjoyed eating was the buffalo burger. On some special nights, they only offer specials and no burger which was a bummer.

Nice place, but. The biggest bummer for me was some of the other guests. This place is wellll off the beaten path. There are not too many places like this to stay that are truly in wilderness. Somehow though, several guests felt that loud music, loud partying, loud vehicles etc was acceptable in a wilderness setting. The folks running the camp didn't seem to be bothered by this either. I doubt it, but hope this is a rarity. This may not be the serene mountain stay you are hoping for.

Very cute resort and campground! Staff was super friendly and helpful. A great place to relax and recharge so much beautiful scenery and a lot to explore in the area! Loved the artwork in the bathrooms!!!

Truly unique experience. The ride in is very memorable 12 plus miles narrow windy two way road which often is wide enough for one car only. Staff and people extremely friendly. Restaurant very good. Hot springs are mostly mud holes with some surrounded by concrete slabs, but are the real deal, very natural. Beautiful setting. Prefer Mammoth, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon but this area is very nice also. Cabins are barebones but adequate

Magical place up in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Everything is so peaceful and beautiful, people that come here are chilled and polite, the drive up here is spectacular. The staff is very polite and helpful and the ameneties are all you need to live on this beautiful rock we call home. There are many activities you can do, many hot springs you can visit, many hikes, many lakes, many things to see. Nature is healing and coming here to Mono Hot springs will bring you right in the middle of nature. I recommend it to anyone, wholeheartedly.

Enjoyed our stay. The road in for about an hour is unimproved, narrow, steep and takes good tires and some skill. The road is one way in, one way in, same way out, with no commercial businesses except for the small camp store and cafe at Mono Hot Springs Resort. So best to bring in food. Drinking water & firewood are available and each cabin has a fire pit and comfortable picnic table. ||The attraction is fantastic hiking and several great natural hot springs & lakes close by. Also a hot spring fed large hot tub and small private tubs and massage service. ||We had a great stay. Hosts friendly.

Historical resort built in the 1930s rock Single one & two bedroom cabins with kitchens and tent cabins. The restaurant is absolutely delicious the buffalo ribs are a must try. They have a general store that has everything that you would need or forgot they have lots of souvenirs as well as T-shirts and sweatshirts. The hot springs are across the river there’s about 14 they are very relaxing, sitting outside soaking and watching the sunset What a beautiful picture. There is a mineral water Bathhouse with showers and deep tubs they also have a masseuse. There are campgrounds located across the street but they are not associated with the resort I believe you go on the reserve America website to make reservations. This place is just a gem located in the middle of Sierra national forest. The road is not the best but I hear they will be working on it soon. I did read some of the reviews and giving only three stars because of the road the resort has nothing to do with the road. Everything was just wonderful my family had a great time just being together not always on cell phones or laptops Quality time he’s very important.

This place is a mixed bag...||||Pros: It's surrounded by glorious mountains and forests. Swimming in the river provided much needed relief from the sweltering heat. If you get up early, you can have Old Pedro (a hot spring) to yourself, which is a lovely way to start the day followed by a cold plunge in the river. ||||Cons: The cabins are as rustic and old as you'd expect them to be. They're clean enough as long as you don't look too closely or have unreasonable standards for such things. The bed was old and rough and it was really hot inside at night; I'd have been more comfortable in my tent outside, to be honest. The grounds have various detritus strewn about (scrap metal, tools, etc.), which takes a way from the natural surroundings. ||||We found two scorpions in our cabin in two days, which was a bit unsettling given that we didn't know how to catch and release them safely. (Just a heads up; I don't fault the resort for their presence). Even more unsettling from a wildlife perspective was the family of bears that strolled through the cabin area multiple times. To be clear, the bears are not at fault here. This is their territory. Who is at fault though is the resort that has done almost nothing to dissuade the bears from coming in to seek (and clearly find) food. This is the only place I've ever been in bear country that doesn't have bear safe trash bins and doesn't post expectations for guests on how to store food to keep bears away. As a result, bears have clearly learned that they can come here and get food easily. This is a deadly setup for the bears. They learn to associate humans with food instead of fearing humans and relying on their own means of getting food naturally. Having a resort in bear country and not taking the time/effort to keep it bear safe is just irresponsible. ||||Finally, a word about the staff. According to their website they're supposed to be available to provide advice for hikes, finding springs, etc. We were greeted by Jeff when we arrived and he was indeed warm and friendly. He told us to come back when we were ready to hike and someone would be happy to help. The young lady we encountered when we went seeking such advice was far more interested in her phone than she was in helping. She barely looked up when we asked her for directions, then handed us a cartoon illustration of the resort and said "walk about 20 minutes that way and you'll find the lake" before shrugging us off completely. She neglected to mention that the access points to the lake are hard to find. It would have been helpful to have some tips here. When we returned a second time to ask for help the following day, she didn't even utter a response when I spoke to her. At that point, I simply walked out. ||||All in all, I'd be more inclined to stay at the campground along the river or to camp elsewhere nearby rather than paying for a grungy cabin, mostly rude staff, and irresponsible approach to wildlife.

WHAT THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU WHEN YOU CALL TO BOOK YOUR CABIN. ALSO THERE IS A $400 MANDATORY DEPOSIT. AFTER THEY TAKE YOUR CREDIT CARD, THEY MAY NOT ANSWER THE PHONE TO YOU. GET ALL YOUR DETAILS BEFORE GIVING YOUR CARD! I called 2 days before my trip, and the morning of to verify directions and they knew my number on caller ID and were intentionally ignoring because they had my money already!! The two men who own it are "nice" to your face, but I really felt screwed over about this trip and feel I wasted money when it could have been a free camping trip! Make sure you get all you need before the General Store closes, or there will be no one to call for help, etc. ||||||1. The actual natural hot springs are FREE to visit and on NATIONAL FOREST LAND. The website for Mono Hot Springs Resort is very misleading. You also as a paying guest, share the springs with ALL of the public, who are camping or staying at the resort. It is not private like a real hot springs resort. They have a tiny pool, and offer to give you a bath tub filled with the hot spring water as the "amenity." The actual hot springs are about a 1/4 mile hike from the resort, although they are "open 24 hours," unless you are VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA it is unsafe the trek to these springs at night. The third night there, I thought I was finally comfortable to find the spring at night and panicked alone in the meadow being lost in the dark for a bit. They do not help you at all to locate the springs. When you check in, they give you a map and wish you luck! They do not mention any of this on the phone when booking!! ||||2. The cabins do not have any electric outlets, the electricity gets cut 11:45 PM - 8 AM daily. There were more bugs in the cabin than usually come into my tent when camping. ||||3. The bath house closes at 8PM, which was a very inconvenient time of day to have a nice evening. I ended up having to do a splash bath from the sink in my cabin most nights, and would have been fine just camping at that point. ||||4. The road is a ONE WAY pass with and elevation of 9,000 FT to get there. It is very gnarly. The person on the phone made it sound like an average mountain drive. I am from Colorado, and have drove on the highest road in North America Trailridge Road, and felt more afraid driving on Kaiser Pass. I would have appreciated the honesty when asking how the drive was on the phone before booking. ||||5. There is camping for $20 closer to the actual Mono Natural Hot Springs than the resort. There is FREE disperse camping too! Because the springs are on public land, although you pay to stay at the "Hot Springs Resort," it is entirely up to you to actually find the hot springs near the campsite and you walk through the public campgrounds away from the resort to get there. YOU MUST BE PHYSICALLY ABLE TO DO THIS TRIP. They do not mention this on their website or anywhere. I suffer herniated discs and it could have ended up being an issue. You must be able to carry your belongings & water at least 1/4 mile to and from the springs, when injured or physically compromised this can be difficult.

The cabin was rustic, the scenery is amazing, but there are some things you should know before you book: 1. The actual hot springs are on Sierra Forest public property. They are at least 1/4 mile hike from the “resort,” and VERY difficult to find your way back once it is dark. The path to the hot springs is practically a marsh, or you must be able to cross a log bridge across a river to access the one really HOT spring they have. Once you check in they just give you a map & wish you luck finding the hot springs after you paid to stay at what was advertised as a hot spring resort. 2. Get all the answers BEFORE you give your cc. They did not answer the phone 2 days before my trip, or the day of my trip when calling to confirm details!! The person taking reservations told me to not use the GPS & to follow the directions on the website. I stated I was a single female traveling alone, and asked how the drive was. They did not mention that it is an extreme mountain pass and the road is one way, putting you at a high risk for a head on collision on a cliff side. They should have given thorough directions, and have good ones on their website of they are telling people to go off the website!! I got lost in the mountains and wasted several hours having to stop and ask strangers several times = not safe. I actually cried from the stress of being lost on my way there. 3. There is FREE disperse camping in the area less than 1/2 mile from the resort near Doris Lake trail. Also the local Sierra Forest campground only charges $20 a night. The campground is actually closer to the hot springs than the resort that advertises it is a “Hot Springs Resort.” 4. The bathhouse closes at 8PM. So you basically have to run your entire schedule and activities around these hours. I ended up only taking 2 showers in 4 days due to this, and ended up just having to use body wipes to bathe - so you might as well enjoy the free camping and use a body wipe. 5. They didn’t bring kinling with the fire wood my last night, making it a challenge to get a fire going. Luckily I spent years building fires so I was able to get around it. One of the main amenities was that you get firewood and kinling every night. It seems they really weren’t concerned if you could find the hot springs, or have a campfire! 6. There were tons of BUGS in the cabin. My tent has a better bug screen.

We camped in the campground with a 20' trailer. It was not easy getting up Kaiser pass with it during such a busy time of year but the destination was well worth it. The campground has multiple places to access the river for swimming and riding rapids, as well as good fishing spots. Bathrooms were well kept and despite the campground being full, we didn't feel crowded. The hot springs and Doris Lake were fun little hiking trips and towards the end of my trip I treated myself to an hour at the bathhouse in a private tub with hot mineral water from the natural springs ($7 per 30 min).

I’ve been looking forward to checking this place out for almost a year. Not very many people posted about the road to get there but it’s REALLY rough. We had to split a single lane on a cliff with several cars; pretty nerve racking. That said, the place is beautiful. The resort is charming. All the hot springs were SUPER packed (not social distancing). We hiked around 3 inch mud and were not able to find a space. We decided to pay for the mineral baths at the resort BUT, they charge 7$ per person and you only have an allotted slot of 30 minutes (which is supposed to include your shower and mineral bath) and it’s only from 12-4pm (we got there at 5). I felt the 30 minute slot seemed rushed and it’s a bummer that they stop at 4pm. People are allowed to camp on the road outside for free; they use the store and they use the hot springs too, so when camping you’re really just paying $36 for a campfire. I can see how more adventurous people could enjoy the place but it really just wasn’t for me.

It's a bit of an effort to get out here, but it's gorgeous. The last 13 miles or so are a one lane road with the 9000 ft. cliff at your side..... Hairy yet very fun and a great adventure. Great trout fishing in the most picturesque country.

I'm giving an extra star because initially I thought the cost to rent a cabin seemed affordable. I've been wanting to visit this place for years but we were promised a microwave in our cabin, which we didnt get & told free firewood was delivered daily. Turns out we had to pay $18 for 2 little bundles of wood but the other cabins got theirs free. The second night we were there, I woke up feeling something crawling on me & had to find my flashlight since the lights dont work late at night. There were 2 HUGE spiders IN MY BED WITH ME! Couldn't sleep after that & couldn't even turn on the lights to keep other spiders away.||My friend had hurt her foot so we left a day early & the lady in the store was super nice & offered to refund us the $141 for that night, which made me very happy. She said I'd get an email with the amount refunded to my credit card, which I never got. When I called to ask about it, I was told, no. They dont do that, like I was demanding special treatment or something, even though I told the guy it was offered to me. He said he'd call me back & let me know what they were going to do. Then he didnt ever call. ||So not only did we not get to go in ANY of the hot springs because there was a naked man in the first one & then my friend hurt her foot, but we were promised things we didnt get & then lied to about a refund. Not to mention the uninvited spiders that were crawling on me while I slept.||I will not be going back there. Ever.

What a wonderful find! I was looking for a mountain getaway that was secluded, in the wilderness, and was not crowded. I couldn't have asked for more. This place is a gem, and they have tent cabins, to the decked out Honeymoon Cabin to fit anyone's needs! Truly a wonderful getaway. Family owned and run, Jeff and Joe and the staff are all very friendly and go above and beyond. Can't wait to be back. Truly rejuvenating!!

Personally it's my heaven. I like to camp but not being dirty do the bath house is great somewhere I can relax in a bath and fix my hair. The staff was always wonderful. My kids loved it. Was always lucky enough to enjoy good people camp fires and someone playing the guitar. There is a peace under the stars that makes this my favorite place to go. Ronnie and Michael were wonderful and educated us on the area. Love it

Not easy to get to but fun to get to. Quaint and interesting when you do get there. We stopped in at the cafe for lunch while hunting for hot springs. The cafe had great burgers and good beer. The hot springs were meh. In one of the hot springs there are creepy mud faces that previous visitors have sculpted into the banks.

The road in was a little scary but once there very worth It! The cabins were clean and the bed was comfortable and cozy. Great place for a couples get away or for a whole family. Even for a group of friends. The people working treated everyone like an old friend and made us feel welcome. The scenery is California at its best.

We will never forget the special time we had at Mono Hot Springs! We spent 4 days and 3 nights in this beautiful, secluded location. Our basic cabin was clean and quiet, but what made the trip so special is the staff! Joe and Jeff are super nice, and Nicholas, who runs the bathhouse, was animated and very knowledgeable about the local hikes. In addition, the groundskeepers and people who worked at the restaurant were really friendly. That’s a good sign if you have staff who keeps returning year after year ! Anyways, we had a wonderful time at a special place in the Sierras that we will never forget!!!

Amazing location with beautiful views and comfortable amenities. I can't put into words how wonderful our stay was, other than I can't wait to come back for another stay The hot springs are relaxing, with beautiful views. The cabins are cozy and clean and have their own showers and bathrooms, but the resort still has a bath house fed by the hot springs. The camp store has all the common items you might have forgotten to pack, and the resort also has a small restaurant. This place has everything you need! My favorite part was the hike up the mountain (about 2 miles) to Doris Lake. While the river was cold from melting snow, the lake was the perfect temp. Like I said, I can't wait to come back. This place is amazing!!

Great place to relax, explore, experience something totally new and out of the ordinary. Got a ridiculously cheap coupon off Groupon. Staff is very helpful. Springs are really unique. The views are phenomenal. The drive up was amazing including the one lane road to get there. Recommended.

Spent a few mid-week days (M-F) here in July 2018. WOW for the location and all amenities, both the resort owned and run amenities, as well as the spectacular publicly (on National Forrest land) owned amenities. This spot is truly remote and most certainly worth the long, somewhat nerve wracking, single-lane drive up and over the mountain, where it does indeed get a little bit "cliffy" at times, just to get here. My driver was intensely cautious the entire 2-hour drive, but for myself, as the passenger. I lost count of the number of times my eyes made me exclaim a loud "WOW" completely involuntarily on the drive into Mono0 Hot Springs resort....I think the first "WOW" may have come somewhere on the approach to Shaver Lake. ||||We stayed in one of the single room cabins, big enough for two, but the bed is only a full, and since we're used to at least a queen, we found the bed and the space a little on the small side. We had our dog with us and he, of course, sleeps on the bed with us, so it made for some rather restless nights...but...as I have said previously...the broken sleep nights are most certainly well worth it!||||We chose to eat at the resort restaurant, Mono's River Rocks Restaurant, for one meal a day, and we're glad we did. The food was excellent, particularly the salmon, which was divine. All of the burgers, Elk, Buffalo and the Mono, are excellent and the young lad making the food in the kitchen should be very proud of his skills. Every meal we had was perfection, the service was absolutely top notch, quick, precise, and most important of all, fun!||||We chose to relax in the bath house/spa for our first taste of the resort and we were not disappointed. The claw-foot bathtubs and big, roomy, comfortable, quiet and peaceful and make for a stimulatingly peaceful soak. There is a large wooden bed to lay out on when the natural hot spring water gets too hot and you need a break, although...perhaps a lovely peace of wood smoothed to act as a head support would be a lovely thing to find inside the room. Tip - as far as I could tell, there are 2 large claw foot tubs and 2 large slate ceramic square tubs....I didn't try the square slate tubs...but they really didn't look very comfortable. The outdoor hot tub in the spa area is nice enough, it's large, and can probably fit at least 8 people comfortably...and, much like everywhere in this place...it comes with a spectacular view!||||||We hiked up to Doris Lake next and goodness me was that an amazing hike. I love a good hike and the hiking in the Ansel Adams Wilderness is among the best on the planet, so this part of our stay was one I was really looking forward to, and I was not disappointed. The views of the mountains and the San Joaquin River valley from the trails are absolutely spectacular and the trails themselves are well maintained and fairly easy to follow, so long as you know what to look for as trail markers from fellow hikers rather than clear signs...though, there are a couple of good sign posts directing you to either Doris Lake or Tule Lake. We spent a glorious afternoon swimming and just floating in the lake. For a good hour or so we had our immediate surrounding section of the lake all to ourselves, we were the only folks there, in the middle of the day. When we arrived a large family of several adults and a few young children were just leaving and they very helpfully directed us to the best route from which to get into the lake, which was a blessing as we were having trouble finding easy access (for a couple of 60-year-olds!). After an hour or two relaxing in the lake we decided it was time to head back to the cabin. At the spot where we had met the large family that were just leaving about two hours earlier in the afternoon, we found a large discarded plastic soda bottle just left on the ground...in the wilderness! This was sad to see, but we figured maybe one of the kids dropped it (they were pretty young kids) and none of the adults noticed, so we decided it was just left there accidentally.||||||Next day we hiked up to the Iodine natural hot spring bath, which is over looking a wide shallow stretch of the San Joaquin River. WOW...again...and again...and again! It's a delightful, easy, short hike back up the road you take into the resort, to the little bridge over the river and across the hillside along the river, following the trickle of water running down the hill from the spring. The Iodine baths are in a truly impressive setting, the incredible high Sirra Nevada Mountains are on one side, the baths themselves are in a wild flower meadow which was blooming with lots and lots of different wildflowers in mid-July, with the calming San Joaquin River below. The baths themselves are deep, I am 6 ft tall and the water comes up to my neck when standing...which I really, really, really liked...but for anyone shorter it might be a little less relaxing...though ther4e are good sizzed ledges to stand on raising you a couple of feet or so above the water. The temperature in the concrete lined tubs of the Iodine spring is perfect to just stand, float and relax in for a nice long, leasurely soak. Just above the stand-up baths are several smaller, hotter, and much shallower hot springs that are rather muddy...which of course makes for a fabulous mud bath. Below the stand-up baths is the San Joaquin River, which at this point includes several natural hot springs actually inside the river. Each hotspring pool, there are about four of them, is surrounded by strategically placed large river rocks, the closer you get to the river the cooler the hotspring! Each of these in-the-river natural hotsprings is large enough for several adults and each one is shallow enough for kids. The big negative for our time at the Iodine baths was the amount of garbage we had to clean up when we got there. The entire area was strewn with empty beer cans and soda cans, cigarette butts, napkins, empty (polystyrene!) food containers, various articles of clothing, both male and female, plastic cuttlery, and of course, to top it off a nice pile of human vomit! Howeverm, once we'd cleaned the baths...we had a spectacular time and would deffinitely come back for another soak. Which is how we feel about the Mono Hotsprings resort, we had a wonderful time and would definitely like to come back some time.

My favorite thing about California so far is this hidden gem. So many great memories from this place. Amazing historic, clean and updated cabins at great prices. Very helpful employees and staff. Endless hiking and exploring opportunities. Beautiful pristine hot springs you can have to yourselves. Bring your friends and family to truly wow them. The road in is one of the best parts. Safe and easily accessible, but not for the faint of heart. Love it!

Majestic. Without judgment of not knowing what it would be, other than "outdoorsy camping spot at elevation", I was blown away. We car camped the first few nights, great camp host, then got a cabin the last night. Campsites each so unique, some too close to neighbors with kids :p but breathtaking. Paved road in camp area made getting to bathroom accessible for wheelchair. Our first campsites had soft sand, not great to roll on, we moved to an area on river side who's main area was more compacted and easier to roll on. Not really great, but more possible than many other camping options. Getting to natural Hot spring not accessible, BUT there's a concrete hot tub with rails and a drop seat to get in with natural Hot spring water. An amazing masseuse offered fantastic restorative massage. (Camping with hot tub and massage? And a restaurant! Wow) We drove in a lowered handicap accessible van, and if a few pot holes were bigger we'd be in trouble. UNDERSTAND THIS, you will have to drive slow if you have a low car, no 4 wheel drive. It's a task in patience, but absolutely can be done, and it's a gorgeous drive with breathtaking views... For the passenger! Leaving there were fire trucks responding to a fire, that were able to pass us on this crazy cliff. You'll need a drink after you get off that road, but you'll be in a hidden Paradise.

The place to go for relaxation, rejuvenation, and lot more. We enjoyed our stay at the cabins. They have awesome people working there, very helpful. The restaurant is very conveniently open for lunch and dinner, so I didn't have to cook. Mini store has just about anything you may need in your stay. Overall we enjoyed our stay, only if they could fix the road to get there....
