Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station
A major nuclear power plant located near Wintersburg, Arizona, USA. It is the largest nuclear power generating facility in the United States, producing about 3.8 GW of clean electricity, enough to serve around four million people across the Southwest. It consists of three pressurized water reactors and uniquely uses treated wastewater for cooling instead of a natural water body.

Forty years ago western society turned away from nuclear power, Three Mile Island, The China Syndrome (a movie) and then Chernobyl made sure that the hysteric's view prevailed and new construction stopped. Three Mile Island was a confirmation of the safety systems, The China Syndrome was a joke (Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon & Michael Douglas), Chernobyl was a disaster of Soviet engineering, planned economies and disregard for life. Since then Fukashima is the only other major nuclear disaster.
Take a moment and consider that there are 57,309,000 square miles of land on this planet, Fukashima and Chernobyl rendered 1,743 square miles of uninhabitable land , that's 0.00003042% of the earth's surface.
In the intervening 40 years we have continued to use fossil fuels at an ever increasing rate and, I would argue are on the irreversible brink of rendering the entire planet uninhabitable. Thanks Jane, Jack, Michael and the other uninformed hysterics.
Nuclear power is the ONLY clean source of power that will ever fully meet our ever increasing electrical needs.
I'm visiting Phoenix from Iowa, second only to Texas for wind power generation (6000 windmills in Iowa). Windmills cause all kinds of problems. They are made with petrochemicals, they shed ice chunks for hundreds of yards in the winter, they kill birds, and cause ground tremors. A couple of them were just hit by tornadoes and the debris will sit in a landfill for centuries. They only work when the wind blows. When the wind stops the coal and natural gas generators turn on.
The average Iowa citizen can't even use the power they generate because big Internet companies suck up all the wind generated electricity with the scads of server farms they have built in Iowa, so they can say they use "green" energy. And the Iowa economy benefits from the tremendous number of jobs server farms create (about 25 jobs per farm--WOW! That fixes our economy! NOT!)
I previously posted that my Gamma Scintillator was picking up a small amount of I-131. Upon confirming with the company that built the detector, it turns out that it was picking up radioactive potassium, which is completely natural and normal.
Now I need to read the manual about isotope recognition again...
One other thing, if you think this plant is too old, then work to encourage our government representatives to build new ones.
Moved to Phoenix 7 years ago and saw the steam clouds in the west horizon. Found out it was this! Very well run and regulated power plant. That steam creates a filter wall also for that area which is a plus living in the desert.
No over time until outage starts. On the road for 38hrs for 50 to 60hrs a week. Was told by recruiter there would be over time. Great people, just don't come here for over time, even if they so..
Took a tour of this plant over the weekend. Incredible. This is one of Arizona's best assets! Produces a ton of carbon free electricity and has done so for decades. Great staff and great leadership!
I will tour this facility and give a review. I would hope that reviews would be based on facts and how it is run, not political leanings. This sort of plant is very highly regulated and as long as that is true, I'm all for nuclear power but it must be TIGHTLY CONTROLLED and never taken for granted. Redundant failsafes are the key with level headed engineers and regulators to be in change. I have a Giger counter! Will travel!
The ignorance in these reviews is breathtaking. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself a bit about energy production and nuclear energy before you spout off. This power plant provides 40% of Arizona electricity and has run reliably for almost 40 years. The NRC recently extended its operating license another 20 years. If you live here be thankful for the foresight of APs in the 1970s. It's to bad California didn't have the same foresight.
I can see right through the thin arguments against this wonderful installation. I can actually see through most things now, after visiting! Yes I did drink the water, why?
It's quite old. According to the IAEA, life expectancy of a nuke plant is 20-40 years. Palo Verde Reactors 1&2 were built in 1986, Reactor 3 in 1988. Do the math. Then move west of it.
Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS) utilizes treated wastewater from Phoenix so yes it does have a major water supply. And it's a marvel, the biggest power producer in the USA, supplying electric power for Phoenix, Tucson, Las Cruces, El Paso, and even Palm Springs. Life in the scorching hot southern deserts would not be possible without PVNGS, so thanks indeed for the comfortable lives you give us.
Despite what people say about renewables, nuclear is the way to go. Solar and wind replace and destroy the environment they are meant to save. I for one do not want nature replaced by solar and wind farms. Nuclear is by far the safest energy source with the smallest carbon footprint(yes less than solar and wind) and it is also has the smallest geographic footprint along with the highest energy density. Nuclear, geothermal, hydroelectric, with some solar to handle the daytime energy demands around air conditioning and industrial needs with a few natural gas stations to stabilize the grid and handle emergency conditions is the best solution to the energy problem today. It may not be perfect but until other technologies mature it's the way to go. Palo verde is a safe place and provides needed power to the whole southwest region.
The risk of nuclear meltdown is often overblown. Coal causes much more health damage from simply operating. The smoke from coal in fact contains large amounts of radioactive elements, so the coal plants we have spreads much more radiation than one nuclear meltdown once in a while.

You obviously don't realize how many panels it would take to generate the amount of electricity Palo Verde provides to Arizona, New Mexico, S.W. Texas, and Southern California. There must be several back-ups for the solution of no water source. Actually, Palo Verde is safer from a security threat due to being away from water sources.
